مَنْwho ليfor me إِذاwhen جُدْتُI yield up my soul بَينَamong الأَهْلِthe family والوَلَدِand the children
وَكانَand was مِنّيfrom me نَحْوَtoward الموْتِdeath قيدthe span of يَدِa hand
Who will help me when I yield up my soul among my family and children,
When I am distressed between family and children
And death is but a hand's breadth away from me?
And death's grip holds me tight
وَالدَّمْعُand the tears يَهْمُلُstream down وَالأَنْفاسُand the breaths صَاعِدَةٌrising
فَالدَّمْعُso the tears فيin صَبَبٍa downward flow والنَّفْسُand the soul فيin صُعُدِan ascent
And tears stream down while breaths rise,
My tears flow freely and my breath comes in gasps
So tears descend, while the soul ascends.
Tears in streams and breath in throes
ذَاكَthat الْقَضَاءُthe decree الذيwhich لاno شَيءَthing يَصْرِفُهُaverts it
حَتَّىuntil يُفَرِّقَit separates بينَbetween الرُّوحِthe soul وَالجَسَدِand the body
That is the decree which nothing can avert,
Such is the decree that nothing can avert
Until it separates the soul from the body.
Until it severs spirit from flesh
