    وَالشَّهْرُ يُحسَبُ أَنَّهُ دَهْرُ

    The lover’s day is so long it is a month;

    And the month is reckoned an age.

    May my father and mother be ransom for a graceful maiden, on whose cheek

    Is magic, and between whose eyelids is magic.

    وَالبدْرُ يَحْسَبُ أنَّها البَدْرُ

    The sun thinks her the sun of midmorning;

    And the full moon thinks her the full moon.

    So ask love about her—it will answer; and if she has gone far away,

    Then ask the wastelands—the wilderness will answer you.

    Whose are the dwellings at Ramatayn and Aqil?

    They have been effaced, and the rain has altered their traces.
