    My dear son, if the physician Ibn Muslim is baffled

    by your wasting illness, and so is the master of rhymed eloquence,

    I shall surely plead beneath the darkness with a prayer—

    whenever a supplicant offers it to God, he is heard.

    لها شافِعٌ مِنْ عَبرَةٍ وَتَضَرُّعِ

    Its sobbing shakes what lies between the ribs;

    it has an intercessor in tears and humble entreaty.

    To the dispeller of distress, who answers whoever calls,

    I have turned in my anguish; He is the best refuge.

    So, O best of those invoked, I have called on You: hear me.

    And I have no intercessor but Your grace, so intercede for me.
