لقَدْindeed سَجَعَتْcooed فيin جُنْحِthe darkness of لَيْلٍa night حَمامةٌa dove
فَأَيَّand what أسىًsorrow هَاجَتْshe stirred علىupon الهائِمِthe love-bewildered one الصَّبِّthe lovesick one
Indeed, a dove cooed in the darkness of night,
A dove cooed softly in the wings of night,
and what sorrow she stirred in the bewildered, lovesick lover!
What sorrow stirred in the weary soul?
لَكِto you الويلُwoe كمْhow much هَيَّجْتِyou stirred شَجْويmy sorrow بِلَاwithout جَوىًheartache
وَشكوَىand lament بِلاwithout شَكوىlament وَكَرْباًand anguish بِلَاwithout كَرْبِanguish
Woe to you! How deeply you stirred my sorrow, without heartache of your own,
Woe to you, how you roused my ache without solace,
and lament, without lament of your own, and anguish, without anguish of your own.
My plaint without plaint, and grief without grief,
وأَسْكبْتِand you made flow دَمْعاًtears مِنْfrom جُفُونِthe eyelids of مُسَهَّدٍa sleepless one
وَمَاyet not رَقْرَقَتْglistened مِنْكِfrom you المَدَامِعُthe tear ducts بِالسَّكبِwith shedding
And you made tears flow from a sleepless man's eyelids,
And drew tears from heavy-lidded eyes,
yet your own eyes did not glisten with streaming tears.
Yet your tears streamed not forth in floods.
