أَدعُوI call إِليكَto you فلاbut no دُعاءٌplea يُسْمَعُis heard
ياO مَنone who يَضُرُّharms بِناظِرَيهِwith his two eyes وَيَنْفَعُand helps
I call to you, but no plea is heard.
I call upon you, but no call is heard,
O you who harm and help with your two eyes.
O you who can harm with your gaze and benefit,
لِلْوَرْدِfor the rose حِينٌa season ليسَdoes not يطلعُbloom دُونَهُbefore it
والوَردُand the rose عِنْدَكَwith you كُلَّevery حِينٍmoment يَطلُعُblooms
The rose has a season before which it does not bloom,
The rose has a season when it does not bloom,
and with you the rose blooms at every moment.
Yet with you, the rose blooms at all times.
لمdid not تَنْصَدِعsplit كَبِدِيmy liver عَلَيْكَover you لِضَعْفهاbecause of its weakness
لكِنَّهاbut it ذابَتْmelted فماso it does not تَتَصَدَّعُsplit
My liver did not split over you because of its weakness;
My heart did not shatter for you out of weakness,
but it melted, and so it cannot split.
Rather it melted, so it does not shatter.
مَنwho ليfor me بأَحوَرَwith a dark-eyed one ماnot يبينُspeaks clearly لسانُهُhis tongue
خَجلاًout of shyness وسَيْفُand the sword جُفُونِهِof his eyelids ماdoes not يَقْطَعُcut
Who will help me with a dark-eyed one whose tongue does not speak clearly
Who do I have with bashful cheeks, whose tongue does not reveal,
out of shyness, while the sword of his eyelids does not cut?
And whose eyelids' swords do not cut?
مَنعَhe forbade الكلامَspeech سِوىexcept إشارَةِa gesture مُقْلَةٍan eye
فَبهاso through it يُكلِّمُنيhe speaks to me وَعَنهاand through it يَسمَعُhe hears
He forbade speech except for the gesture of an eye;
Speech is forbidden, except for a wink from a glance,
so through it he speaks to me, and through it he hears.
With it, he speaks to me, and through it, he hears.
