أَتَقتُلنيDo you kill me ظُلماًunjustly وتجحَدُنيand deny to me قَتليmy being killed
وقدand indeed قامَhave arisen مِنfrom عينيكَyour two eyes ليfor me شاهِداtwo witnesses عَدْلِuprightness
Do you kill me unjustly and deny that you killed me,
Will you unjustly slay me and deny my murder
When two upright witnesses have arisen for me from your two eyes?
When my eyes bear witness to you as my just executioner?
أَطُلَّابَO seekers of ذَحليvengeance for my blood ليسَthere is not بيafflicting me غَيرُother than شادنٍa young gazelle
بعينيهِin his two eyes سِحرٌmagic فاطْلبواso seek عندهfrom him ذحليvengeance for my blood
O seekers of vengeance for my blood, my only affliction is a young gazelle,
My camel is lost; none but he can find it.
In whose two eyes is magic; so seek vengeance for my blood from him.
With his eyes he has magic; seek from him my camel.
أغارَhe raided علىupon قلبيmy heart فلماand when أَتيتُهُI came to him
أطالبُهُI demand of him فيهِconcerning it أَغارَhe raided علىupon عقليmy mind
He raided my heart; and when I came to him,
He stole my heart; when I came to reclaim it,
To demand it back from him, he raided my mind.
I asked for it back and he stole my reason.
بنفسيwith my life as ransom التيher who ضنَّتshe begrudged بردَّwith returning سَلامِهاher greeting
ولوand even if سألتْshe asked for قَتليmy being killed وهبْتُI would grant لهاto her قتليmy being killed
I would give my life for her who begrudged me her answering greeting,
With the soul he stinted with the chill of his greeting—
And even if she asked for my death, I would grant her my death.
Had it asked my murder, I'd have given my murder.
إذاwhen جئتُهاI come to her صدَّتْshe turns away حَياءًout of shyness بوجهِهاwith her face
فتهجرنيso she shuns me هجراًa shunning أَلذّsweeter منَthan الوصْلِunion
When I come to her, she turns her face away in shyness,
When I come to her, she turns her face away shyly
So she shuns me—a shunning sweeter than union.
So she estranges me with a sweeter estrangement than union.
وإنْand if حَكمتْshe judges جارَتْshe acts unjustly عليَّtoward me بحُكمهاin her judgment
ولكنَّand yet ذاكthat الجورَinjustice أشهىmore desirable منَthan العَدلِjustice
And if she judges, she wrongs me in her judgment,
If she judges me, she oppresses me with her judgment;
And yet that injustice is more desirable than justice.
Yet that injustice is sweeter than justice.
كتمتُI concealed الهَوىlove جَهديwith all my effort فجرَّدهُso laid it bare الأَسىsorrow
بماءِwith the water of البُكاweeping هذاthis one يخُطَّwrites وذاand that one يُمليdictates
I concealed my love with all my strength, but sorrow laid it bare,
I concealed my love as best I could, but sorrow
With the water of weeping: this one writes, and that one dictates.
Stripped it bare, this weeping traces it, that dictates it.
وأحببتُand I loved فيهاconcerning her العذْلَreproach حُبّاًout of love لذكرِهاfor mentioning her
فلاso no شيءَthing أَشْهىmore desirable فيin فؤاديmy heart منَthan العَذلِreproach
And I loved reproach concerning her, out of love for the mention of her;
I loved blame for her sake with love of her mention—
So nothing is more desirable to my heart than reproach.
Nothing is sweeter in my heart than blame.
أَقولُI say لقلبيto my heart كلَّماwhenever ضامهُoppresses it الأَسىsorrow
إذاif ماemphatic particle أبيتَyou refuse العزَّdignity فاصبرْthen be patient علىunder الذُّلِّhumiliation
I say to my heart whenever sorrow oppresses it:
I say to my heart whenever sorrow constrains it:
If you refuse dignity, then endure humiliation patiently.
“If you refuse honor, have patience with disgrace.”
برأيكَby your counsel لاnot رأييmy counsel تعرَّضتُI exposed myself للهوىto love
وأَمرِكَand your command لاnot أَمريmy command وفِعلكَand your action لاnot فِعْليmy action
By your counsel, not mine, I exposed myself to love,
I exposed myself to love by your decision, not mine,
And by your command, not mine, and by your action, not mine.
By your command, not mine, by your deed, not mine.
وجدْتُI found الهوىlove نَصلاًa blade لموتيَfor my death مُغمداًsheathed
فجرَّدتُهُso I unsheathed it ثمَّthen اتَّكيتI leaned علىupon النَّصلِthe blade
I found love a blade sheathed for my death,
I found love a scabbard for my death kept sheathed—
So I unsheathed it, then leaned upon the blade.
I drew it then leaned on the naked blade.
فإِنso if كنتُI am مقتولاًslain علىfor غيرِno ريبةٍsuspected wrongdoing
فأنتَthen you الذيthe one who عرَّضتَyou exposed نفسكَyourself للقتلِto being killed
So if I am slain for no fault,
So if I am killed unjustly with no uncertainty,
Then you are the one who exposed yourself to being killed.
It was you who exposed yourself to being killed.
