وربَّand many a طيفٍdream-vision سرىjourneyed by night وهْناًin the night فهيَّجنيand so stirred me
وربَّ طيفٍ سرى وهْناً فهيَّجني
نفَىbanished طَوارقَnightly intrusions of همِّthe worry of النَّفسِthe soul إذْwhen طرقاit came by night
نفَى طَوارقَ همِّ النَّفسِ إذْ طرقا
And many a dream-vision came by night and stirred me;
And the spirit of a vision passed gently, arousing me,
It banished the soul’s night-haunting cares when it arrived.
Banishing the disquiet of my soul when it knocked,
كأنَّماas though أغفلَneglected الرّضوانُRidwan رِقْبتَهُwatching over it
كأنَّما أغفلَ الرّضوانُ رِقْبتَهُ
وَهْناًin the night ففرَّso it fled منfrom الفردَوسِParadise مُسترِقاstealthily
وَهْناً ففرَّ من الفردَوسِ مُسترِقا
As though Ridwan had neglected to watch over it
As though Ridwan had left his neck exposed in his sleep
In the night, so it fled Paradise by stealth.
And, stolen from Paradise because of this gentleness, had fled.
