ليستْ منَ الشِّعرِ الحجازيِّ

A poem whose words have been refined,

A refined verse composition,

not of Hijazi verse.

Though not of Hejazi poetry.

لكنَّها في الصَّوغِ نَجْديَّةٌ

لكنَّها في الصَّوغِ نَجْديَّةٌ

صاحبُها ليسَ بِنجدِيِّ

صاحبُها ليسَ بِنجدِيِّ

Yet in its crafting it is Najdi;

In composition, Najdi in style,

its author is not a Najdi.

Its author no Najdi man.

كوفيَّةُ الإبداعِ بَصْريَّةٌ

كوفيَّةُ الإبداعِ بَصْريَّةٌ

لغيرِ كوفيٍّ وبَصْريِّ

لغيرِ كوفيٍّ وبَصْريِّ

Kufan in invention, Basran,

Kufan in creativity, Basran in eloquence,

by someone neither Kufan nor Basran.

Though by no Kufan nor Basran.

كأنَّها شاذورةٌ عُلِّقتْ

كأنَّها شاذورةٌ عُلِّقتْ

بوجهِ دينارٍ هِرَقْلِيِّ

بوجهِ دينارٍ هِرَقْلِيِّ

It is like a small jewel fastened

As if a pendant attached

to the face of a Heraclian dinar.

To the face of a Heraclian dinar.
