وَقَعنا في الخَطايا وَالبَلايا

وَقَعنا في الخَطايا وَالبَلايا

وَفي زَمَنِ اِنتِقاضٍ وَاِشتِباهِ

وَفي زَمَنِ اِنتِقاضٍ وَاِشتِباهِ

We have fallen into sins and afflictions,

We have fallen into sins and afflictions

And in an age of breakdown and confusion.

And in a time of decline and confusion

تَفانى الخَيرُ وَالصُلَحاءُ ذَلّوا

تَفانى الخَيرُ وَالصُلَحاءُ ذَلّوا

وَعَزَّ بِذُلِّهِم أَهلُ السَفاهِ

وَعَزَّ بِذُلِّهِم أَهلُ السَفاهِ

Goodness has perished, and the righteous have been abased,

Goodness and the virtuous have perished

And through their abasement, the people of folly have gained power.

While the ignorant have gained pride in their disgrace

وَباءَ الآمِرونَ بِكُلِّ عُرف

وَباءَ الآمِرونَ بِكُلِّ عُرف

فَما عَن مُنكَرٍ في الناسِ ناهِ

فَما عَن مُنكَرٍ في الناسِ ناهِ

And those who enjoin every good have turned back,

The leaders have sanctioned all that is improper

So none among the people forbids wrongdoing.

So no one stops wrongdoing among the people

فَصارَ الحُرُّ لِلمَملوكِ عَبداً

فَصارَ الحُرُّ لِلمَملوكِ عَبداً

فَما لِلحُرِّ مِن قَدرٍ وَجاهِ

فَما لِلحُرِّ مِن قَدرٍ وَجاهِ

So the free man has become a slave to the slave,

Thus the free man has become a slave to the owned

So the free man has no standing or prestige.

And the free man has no esteem or stature

فَهَذا شُغلُهُ طَمَعٌ وَجَمعٌ

فَهَذا شُغلُهُ طَمَعٌ وَجَمعٌ

وَهَذا غافِلٌ سَكرانُ لاهِ

وَهَذا غافِلٌ سَكرانُ لاهِ

So this one is preoccupied with greed and hoarding,

One is occupied by greed and hoarding

And this one is heedless, drunk, and frivolous.

While the other is heedless, drunk with distraction
