    Those I love have gone,

and I am left among those I do not love.

Among them is one I see reviling me

behind my back, though I do not revile him.

He seeks my ruin as much as he can,

yet I counsel him out of care for him.

In rancor he creeps toward harm,

and that is something I do not creep toward.

And he sees the flies of evil

buzzing around me, yet does not drive them away.

And when the breasts' rancor dies down,

he keeps at it, rekindling it.

Will he not heed his reason?

Will his good sense not return to him?

Does he not see that his deed

is something whose aftermath will assail him?

    My Lord suffices me against

what I fear; wrongdoing is enough for him.

    And perhaps whoever transgresses against

him—God, his Lord, has not sufficed him.
