وقد فاتني بعض الذي كان مطلبي

I returned with many troubles in my soul,

I have returned with restless thoughts whirling within,

And some of those I had sought had eluded me—

For I have missed some of what I sought to attain -

من أصحاب بدر من قريش وغيرهم

من أصحاب بدر من قريش وغيرهم

بني هاشم منهم ومن أهل يثرب

بني هاشم منهم ومن أهل يثرب

Among the men of Badr, from Quraysh and others,

Companions of Badr from Quraysh and others still,

The sons of Hashim among them, and people of Yathrib.

Hashimites among them and the people of Yathrib.

ولكنني قد نلت شيئاً ولم يكن

ولكنني قد نلت شيئاً ولم يكن

كما كنت أرجو في مسيري ومركبي

كما كنت أرجو في مسيري ومركبي

But I did obtain something, though it was not

Yet I have gained something, though not as I had hoped,

As I had hoped while journeying and riding.

On my journey and voyage, as I roamed and I probed.
