Indeed, ʿAmr, with the tribes of his people, has won

a glory that soared above the blazing stars.

They laid Lakhm and Ghassan under a debt of gratitude

with tawny lances and lean, charging steeds.

Shayban and the tribe of Taghlib protected me

with slender-flanked steeds in their prime and keen-edged swords.

How often deliverance came to us from him through a raid,

and how many a charge when the battalions met!
