أمالئةَO woman who fills الحجلينِthe two anklets ذبتI have melted بحبُكُمwith love for you
ومنكمand from you أرىI see حَظَيmy lot العداوةَenmity والبُغْضَاand hatred
O you whose legs fill both anklets, I have melted with love for you.
My yearning for your affection consumed me,
And from you I find my lot to be enmity and hatred.
Yet from you I found only enmity and hatred.
طَلَبْتُكمI sought you منthrough كلevery فَجٍّmountain pass وبُقْعَةٍand place
ولمand did not أبقI leave فيin سيريmy travels سماءsky ولاnor أرضاearth
I sought you through every mountain pass and every place,
I sought you in every valley and place,
And in my travels I left neither sky nor earth unsearched.
Leaving no sky nor earth unexplored.
واسألُand I ask عنكمabout you كلَّevery ريحٍwind تَمُرُّpasses بيby me
وأطلِقُand I release أفراسيmy horses لاfor (split prefix) خبارِكُمnews of you رَكْضَاat a gallop
And I ask every wind that passes me about you,
I ask every passing breeze about you
And send my horses galloping for news of you.
And unleash my horses to bring news of you.
صِلونيjoin me فإنfor indeed الشوقَlonging أنحلَhas wasted أعظُمِيmy bones
ووصلُكُمand your coming ليto me لوeven if علىon قدمٍfoot أرضىI am content
Come to me, for longing has wasted my bones;
Unite me with you, for separation dissolves me;
And I would be content with your coming to me, even on foot.
Reaching you, even crawling, would please me.

O you with swaying flanks, do you know
My gentle darling, do you know
That great reward lies in visiting the sick?
That healing the sick brings abundant reward?

And if you suffered what I suffer, you would visit me, even on
Had you been afflicted like me, you would have visited me,
The edges of Surayji swords, like lightning or swifter.
Swift as lightning crossing the meadows.

Keeping ties with me is voluntary for you, and a recommended practice;
My loyalty to you is supererogatory and tradition;
But love for you has become an obligation in my creed.
But my passion for you has become an obligation.

And if I seek union with you, union with you
If you shun my friendship, your friendship
Is where the Pleiades are—who can grasp them?
Is to me like plucking stars from the sky.

Nor has forgetting you ever crossed my mind,
Neither does the nightingale cease singing your praises,
Nor has my eye, since you left, tasted sleep.
Nor, without you, is my mouth tempted by a morsel.
