Rashid
حُظَيْظُكَyour paltry lot أدنىlower منthan حَضِيْضٍthe lowest depth وأرْخَصُand cheaper
Listen, O Ubayd Allah, O son of Rashid:
O servants of God, O noble sons of Rashid
Your paltry lot is lower than the lowest depth and worth less.
Your status is lower than the lowest baseness
ولاand never زلتَyou ceased ياO هذاyou there لنفسِكَof yourself مادحاًa praiser
وكمand many a ذيone possessing بياضwhiteness فيamong الورىhumankind وهوwhile he أبرَصُleprous
And you never cease, you there, to praise yourself;
Yet still you praise yourself, O you
And many a white-skinned man among humankind is leprous.
Though so many bright souls are leprous
وتذكرُand you claim فيin أيامناour days أنتَyou حاتمٌHatim
ومنand than مادرٍMadir لاno شَكَّdoubt أنكthat you أحرصُgreedier
And you claim that in our days you are Hatim,
And you see yourself in our time as perfect
And without doubt you are greedier than Madir.
Though undoubtedly you are more avaricious
ومنand from أينَwhere تأتيكَcome to you المحامدُpraiseworthy qualities والندىand generosity
وأنتwhile you الذيthe one who بالمُفْضِحاتِby disgraceful deeds مُخَصَّصُsingled out
And whence could praiseworthy qualities and generosity come to you,
Whence come to you these praises and virtues?
When you are the one marked out by disgraceful deeds?
You, who are marked for disgraces
أرىI see عَورَاتٍshameful parts منكَof yours تَظْهرُappear فيin المَلاthe public
ولُبسكَand your clothing عنaway from أستارِهاtheir coverings يَتَقَلَّصُshrinks back
I see your shameful parts appearing in public,
I see your shameful acts appear openly
And your clothing shrinks back from covering them.
As your clothes fail to cover them
لسانُكَyour tongue منfrom حَمْلِcarrying النميمةِmalicious gossip ألْكَنٌstammering
وَبَطْنُكand your belly ياO هذاyou there منfrom الجوعِhunger أخمصُsunken
Your tongue stammers from carrying malicious gossip,
Your tongue is burdened with gossip
And your belly, you there, is sunken with hunger.
While your belly, O you, is shrunken with hunger
وأنتand you إذاwhen طالتgrows long بِخَدِّكon your cheek لَحيةa beard
يَصيحُcries out بهاat it المِقراضُthe shears يوماًone day تُقَصَّصُwill be clipped
And when a beard grows long upon your cheek,
And if a beard grows long on your cheek
The shears cry out at it: 'One day you will be clipped!'
The shears will one day call out to shorten it
ولوand if أنthat ابليساًIblis تراهsee him عيونناour eyes
لقُلناwe would surely say بمنas to who أردىis baser ومنand who هوhe أنْقَصُmore deficient
And were our eyes to see Iblis,
If we saw Iblis with our eyes
We would surely say: 'Who is baser, and who more deficient?'
We'd say who is more wicked and despicable
وأنتand you مُشَاربٌa drinking companion بالمخازيwith disgraces جميعهاall of them
وَقِرْدٌand a monkey علىon ظَهرِthe back of البسيطةِthe earth يَرْقُصُdances
And you are a drinking companion to every disgrace,
You indulge in every disgrace
And a monkey dancing upon the earth's back.
A monkey dancing atop the cloak
وإنand if أمَّةٌa group of people مَرَّتْpassed بِكُمْby you all قُمتَyou rose مسرِعاًhastening

And if a group passes by you all, you rise in haste,
And if a people pass you rush to
You scratch them sometimes, and at other times you pinch.
Rend them at times and nip them at others
صَحِبْتَyou kept company with العِبَديَّal-Ibadi تطلبseeking التَّتنtobacco منهمfrom them
فَقُبْحاًso shame لشيبٍupon gray hair مِfrom الخَناobscenity لاnot يُخَلَّصُis freed
You kept company with al-Ibadi, seeking tobacco from them;
You accompanied the slaves seeking harm
So shame upon gray hair that is not freed from obscenity.
Shame on white hair that fails to cleanse itself
ستأتيكَwill come to you ياO ذاyou there الحُوسنيal-Husni مُصيِبةٌa calamity

A calamity will come to you, O al-Husni,
Calamity will come to you, O Husaini
And you will be distressed by it for all time.
You who have long been troubled by it
