فلا خَبَرٌ عنه فَقَطُّ أتَانِي
He came to me by night, like a breeze from east and west.
Yet no news of him has ever reached me.
سَرَىhe traveled by night عاتباًreproaching أمْor زَائراًas a visitor لحَبيبِهto his beloved
سَرَى عاتباً أمْ زَائراً لحَبيبِه

يُعانِقُهُ من شِدةِ الولهانِ
Did he come by night to reproach, or to visit his beloved,
embracing him with the intensity of one distraught with love?

And had he heeded my remembrance of him and my praises,
his right hand would not have begun shuffling in fetters.

to seek the one who was lost long ago.

And had all the companions known of my need
for him, humankind and jinn would have striven to seek him.
