أشاقكَdid it stir your longing رسمٌa dwelling's trace أمor أشاقكَdid it stir your longing مربَعُa spring encampment
وهاand behold هُوَit منfrom بعدِafter الأحبةِthe loved ones بَلْقَعُa barren waste
Did a ruined trace stir your longing, or did a spring encampment?
And behold, with the loved ones gone, it is a barren waste.
تَقَعْوَسَit buckled حتىuntil طَحْطَحْتُهcrushed it يدthe hand of البِلىdecay
وتحشيand heaps عليهupon it التربَdust صِرّa bitterly cold wind وزعزعand a violent gale
It buckled until the hand of decay crushed it,
And bitter wind and tempest heap dust upon it.
وقدand already ذبلَتhave withered أغصانُهits boughs وفروعهُand its branches
وحلَّand descended بهupon it خطبٌa calamity منfrom الدَّهرِtime مُفْظعdreadful
And its boughs and branches have already withered,
And a dreadful calamity of time has befallen it.
متىwhen ظعنتdeparted منهfrom it ظباthe gazelles of الأنسhuman company غدوةًone morning
فَظَلّتْthen remained ظباءُthe gazelles of الوحشِthe wild فيهin it فَتَرْتَعand grazed
When the human gazelles left it one morning,
Then wild gazelles remained there, grazing.
يَنُوحُlament عليهover it البومُthe owls والورقُand the grey doves حولهaround it
تُغرِّدُsing بالألحانِin melodies فيهin it وتَسْجَعand coo
Owls lament over it, and the grey doves around it
Sing melodies there and coo.
ولمand did not يَبْقَremain فيهin it غيرexcept موْقدِthe hearth of نارِهمtheir fire

And nothing remained there but their hearth;
Upon it are pot-stones, prostrate and bowing.
وقفتُI stood بهbeside it والمهرُand the colt عالٍhigh صهيلُهits neighing
منfrom الوجدِlonging والنيبُand the aged she-camels الكريمةُnoble تدمعُshed tears
I stood beside it, the colt's neighing rising high
From longing, while the noble old she-camels shed tears.
واذريتand I shed ماءًwater غالياًprecious منfrom مدامعيmy tear ducts
ولولاand were it not for الهوىlove ماnot كانwould be يجريflowing ويَنْبِعُand welling up
And I shed precious water from my weeping eyes;
And were it not for love, it would not flow or well up.
وليسand it is not لذاكfor that الرّبعِdwelling ترخصُare freely spent عبرتيmy tears
ولكنbut علىfor منthose who كانwere بالربعِin the dwelling تُهْمَعare poured forth
And it is not for that dwelling that my tears are freely spent,
But for those who dwelt there they pour down.
سرتْtraveled by night بِهمُwith them فوقatop الركائبِthe riding camels بُزَّلٌfull-grown camels

They were borne by night atop full-grown riding camels,
At times striding across the wastes, at others pacing them out.
وليand I have صَعَقاتanguished cries قدalready عَلَتْrisen high خلفbehind ظعنِهمtheir departing caravan
وقلبيand my heart علىover فرقاهمseparation from them يتقطّعis torn apart
And my anguished cries rose high behind their departing caravan,
And my heart is torn to pieces by separation from them.
وتسعرُand blazes نارُthe fire of الشوقlonging بينbetween جوانحيmy ribs
وقدand already نضجتhave been roasted منيwithin me كبودlivers وأضلعُand ribs
And the fire of longing blazes between my ribs,
And already my livers and ribs are roasted through.
فلاso not أدمعيmy tears تُطفِيquench سعيرَthe blaze of جهنميmy hell
ولاnor مَحَلَتhave dried up منfrom حرِّthe heat of ناريَmy fire أدمعُtears
So my tears do not quench the blaze of my hell,
Nor have tears dried up from the heat of my fire.
ولماand when رأىsaw العُذَّالُthe reproachers حاليmy condition تلاومواblamed one another
وقالواand they said تَلِفْنَاهُwe have ruined him وماand there is no فيهfor him مَرجَعrecovery
And when the reproachers saw my state, they blamed one another,
And said, 'We have ruined him; there is no bringing him back.'

And for one among those slain by separation, there can be no
Hope for his family of claiming compensation.
وليتand would that فتاةًa maiden أتلفتنيhas ruined me بحبهَاthrough love for her

And would that a maiden who ruined me through love for her
Would die, and we be enfolded in a tomb and laid low.
عسىmay it be لمnot يَضِقْbe too narrow لَحديmy burial niche عليfor me بكَمْعهاwith her in my embrace

وندعىand we be summoned معاًtogether يومon the day الخلائقِall creatures تُجْمَعُare gathered
May my grave not be too narrow for me with her in my embrace,
And may we be summoned together on the day all creatures are gathered,

وفيand in غُرفِthe chambers of الحَنَّاتِthe Gardens (presumed reading) نعلوwe rise ونَطْلَعُand we ascend
And may our Lord forgive all our sins,
And in the chambers of the [Gardens] may we rise and ascend.
