يُحاكيresembles القَنَاlance-shafts فيin لِينِهits suppleness واعتدالِهِand its uprightness
And I have a tender maiden, slender beneath her two sashes; her figure
I have a little girl with braided hair, her neck
resembles a lance-shaft in its suppleness and uprightness.
As pliant as a bamboo stalk in its softness and poise
لَهَامِshe has, from الظِبَاthe gazelles جيدٌa neck وأماand as for جَبِينُهاher brow
ينورُshines كبدرِlike the full moon التَّمِfullness عندَat كمالِهِits perfection
She has a gazelle's neck; as for her brow,
Her cheeks like a gazelle’s, her forehead shining
it shines like the full moon at its perfection.
Like the full moon rising at its brightest
وعينٌand an eye كعينِlike the eye of السولعيthe Sawlaʿi antelope وفَرْعُهاand her hair
كَجُنحِlike the wing of الدُّجىdeep darkness فيin لونِهits color وانسدالِهِand its flowing fall
And her eye is like a Sawlaʿi antelope's, and her hair
Eyes like a wild cow’s, her eyebrows’ arc
is like the wing of deep night in its color and its fall.
Like wings of night in their color and slope
عِذارٌcheek-down لهاhers كالروضِlike a garden أخضرُgreen مورقٌleafy
فماso not زالceased طَرفيmy gaze راتعاًgrazing فيin ظِلالِهِits shade
She has cheek-down like a garden, green and leafy;
Teeth like a blossoming meadow, green and dewy
so my gaze has never ceased grazing in its shade.
My eyes have not stopped roving in their shade

She is the tender, swaying maiden, the gazelle whose
She is the soft-gaited, the delicate, the gazelle
grazing grounds lie in ʿAlij or its sands.
Who roams the highlands or sandy wastes
تُوَاصلُنيshe stays close to me والشَامِتُونَand the gloaters غوافلٌheedless
وحاسِدُناand our envier فيin شُكْلِهhis fetters وعِقَالهِand his hobble
She stays close to me while the gloaters are heedless,
She visits me while evildoers sleep
and our envier is held in his fetters and hobble,
And those who envy us plot in their cunning
بليلٍat night كانَّas though الشُّهْبَthe bright stars سِمْطٌa necklace بِنَحْرِهِat its throat
وفيand around جيدِهِits neck طوقٌa collar أضَاshone منfrom هلالِهِits crescent moon
on a night when the bright stars seem a necklace at its throat,
On a night when stars rained down in the sky
and a collar glows around its neck with the light of its crescent,
And the crescent gleamed like a ring on her brow
علىon رَوْضةٍa meadow غَنّاءَlush طيبةِsweet الثرىthe moist soil

in a lush meadow of sweet, moist earth,
In a blooming meadow of sweet grass
whose borders the rain darkens with its limpid water.
With snakes coiling around its edges for water
كأنَّas though نَدَىbounty (also, dew) الشِبلِthe lion-cub الأميرِthe emir محمدٍMuhammad
يفيضoverflows عليهاupon it فيضةa flood بنوالهِwith his gifts
As though the bounty of the lion-cub, Emir Muhammad,
As if the radiance of the cub Muhammad
were pouring upon it in a flood of his gifts.
Spilled over, a stream from his cupped hands

فلاso no أحدٌanyone فيin دهرِهِhis age كمثالِهِlike him
Scion of Saʿid, possessor of virtues and praise—
Scion of the lauded Sa’id, model among men
none in his age is his equal.
None in his time can equal his example
فمنso through عدلِهhis justice لمnot يفترقْbe scattered شملُthe company جامعٍa gatherer
ومنand through جودِهhis generosity لمnot يجتمعْcome together شملُthe whole مالِهِhis wealth
Through his justice, no united gathering has been scattered;
His justice never let a clan fall apart
and through his generosity, his wealth has never gathered into a whole.
His generosity never hoarded wealth
فتىa noble youth لوif يُقاسُwere compared الناسُpeople فيin درجاتِهمtheir ranks
لماwould not بَلَغُواthey attained فيin العزِّglory قدرَthe worth نعالِهِhis sandals
A noble youth—if people were measured by their ranks,
A prince, if people were ranked by their merit
they would not attain, in glory, the worth of his sandals.
His shoe’s laces would exceed their honor
رجوتُI hoped for عطاياهُhis gifts تَصِلْنيto reach me ولمand not يَخِبْbe disappointed
فتىًa youth يرتجيhopes for نفعَthe benefit العَطاbounty منfrom سؤالِهِasking him
I hoped his gifts would reach me; never has disappointment befallen
I hoped his gifts would reach me, nor did I lose hope
a youth who hopes for the benefit of bounty by asking him.
No shame when a gift is sought from its giver
لكمto you ياO سعيديونSaʿidis فخرٌpride بذكرِهِin mentioning him
ودهرُكُمُand your age دهرُthe age of النبيّthe Prophet وآلِهِand his family
Yours, O Saʿidis, is pride in the mention of him;
What pride is yours in his memory!
and your age is the age of the Prophet and his family.
Yours is the age of the Prophet and his kith

And live on, O emir of humankind, like the full moon in the sky,
O prince of men, your blood is like the moon in the sky
shining within its anklet-rings from its curtained chambers.
Illuminating his features in its phases
