    An effaced dwelling by al-Nujayd’s watercourse,

    heaped in ruins, with neither stir nor companion there.

    Its fortunate stars have set, and there have risen

    above it stars encompassed by ill omens.

    صحائفُ منه مُزِّقَتْ وطُروسُ

    It buckled when the hand of decay destroyed it;

    its pages and parchments were torn apart.

    When did the mounts leave it at evening and press headlong onward,

    spanning the wastelands with their strides, measuring them out?

    And I carried from it gentle gazelles,

    whose faces seemed like suns.

    يميل بِهاتِيْهُ الصِبَا فتَميِسُ

    Among them I had a coy, slender-waisted beauty;

    youth sways this maiden, and she moves with grace.

    When she smiles amid her hair, spread loose,

    by God, what lightning kindled in the darkness!

    And wondrous beauty grows stronger in her movements,

    while our strength and spirits grow weak.

    She would meet me in the days of my youth’s first bloom,

    a swaying beauty guarded by the watcher’s vigilant eye.

    تجلَّى لها وجهٌ عليَّ عُبوسُ

    And she glimpsed my temple, the hair upon it smiling;

    a face appeared to her, frowning upon me.

    She wept pearls resembling her jeweled sash and smiling mouth,

    and her speech, like pearls and precious indeed.

    Then, in her anguish, she bit her jujube-red fingertips,

    while the fires within her crackled.

    Then she spoke, while Time’s decree held sway,

    manifest, overturning love’s decrees [text uncertain].

    Fearfully she signaled farewell; never did

    our cheeks, necks, or heads come together.

    Then she turned away, the corners of my eyes streaming with tears,

    while burning pangs and a lingering ache filled my heart.
