To you, leader of the people, I submit my case.

For you are the most eminent of people in standing, and the most exalted,

And the finest of them in character, kindness, and compassion.

With you, humankind’s hopes are never wasted.

And you, when the times press hard upon a young man,

Are surely the kindest of heart among mankind, and the most openhearted.

You made the abodes of glory flourish after there had passed

A time when glory’s abode, before you, lay desolate.

And no wonder that your kindness overflowed to humankind,

For you are, without doubt, a wellspring of good deeds.

And how many a need in the heart of one like me have you fulfilled!

And that, my lord, is no affectation on your part.

So may you never cease to bestow goodness on whoever comes seeking help,

And may eminence never cease to hasten to your door.

And I earnestly hope you will fulfill a need

Quickly—for the best kindness is the swiftest.
