تقلّبني الأفكار شرقاً ومغرباً

تقلّبني الأفكار شرقاً ومغرباً

على أنني لم أنتقل من مكانيا

على أنني لم أنتقل من مكانيا

Thoughts toss me eastward and westward,

Thoughts turn me east and west,

Though I have not moved from my place,

Yet I have not moved from my place,

كما يذهب الظل اليمينَ ويسرةً

كما يذهب الظل اليمينَ ويسرةً

وذو الظل في مثواه ما زال باقيا

وذو الظل في مثواه ما زال باقيا

Just as the shadow moves to the right and to the left,

As a shadow goes right and left,

While the shadow’s owner still remains in his resting place.

While the one with the shadow remains in his dwelling.
