Neither for figures nor for black eyes
No to the shackles and no to the dark eyes
does my heart yearn, nor is it stirred by lissome women.
My heart pours forth and is not moved by reproach

Nor do I turn to wine, even when carried
I will not go to a companion though her cups
in its cups by the palm of a tender maiden's hand.
Bring the solace of benevolent, gentle hands

Nor do I say to a reprover who comes to chide me:
I will not say to a censurer who comes to blame me
Rise, brother of reproach, and leave without being expelled.
"Stand up, O brother of censure, and leave not banished"

ولاnor أحنّI yearn لتحنانfor the plaintive strains of الأغاريدsongs
Nor do I turn my attention to an eye to court it,
I will not help an eye I flirt with
nor do I long for the plaintive strains of songs.
Nor pity the cooing of the gazelles

Nor does a cooing bird's voice stem my tears,
The voice of a rover does not staunch my tears
nor does the lute's ringing set my body swaying.
Nor does the moan of the lute bend my resolve

My soul is too occupied for the tavern and melodies,
My soul is busy with melodies and the melodies are busy
and I have no need of union with fair women in the wastes.
I have no need for union with the white palms

My thought is concerned with nothing but a quest
And my thoughts care only to seek
for glory, or a visible mark upon the world.
Glory or trace left in the cosmos witnessed

Whoever seeks refuge with me while his nights threaten him
He who takes refuge in me though his nights threaten him
has surely found refuge in an unbroken pillar.
Truly takes refuge in a pillar that does not crumble

Indeed, peace with the nights is refused
Nights he refuses to make peace with them
by the resolve of a man born to battle Time.
The resolve of a man born to battle fate

A resolve that drinks the sea's waters with ease
A resolve that makes sea water palatable
and leaves fresh water a watering place unvisited.
And leaves the sweet water untasted

If I have not been granted the keys of Time, neither
If I have never held the reins of time
has its hand ever possessed my keys.
Then it has never held my reins a day

I have spent most of my life not indebted
favor for which to offer it the thanks due a deity.
To it so I owe it no gratitude

Nor have I asked it for what befits
Nor have I ever proposed what suits it
my merit and prudence, and had it gladden me with what I sought.
My bounty and wisdom forbid me intentionally

It turns the reins toward those accorded no
It turns away save those who cannot be weighed
weight; not one of them is of any account.
And none of them can be counted

It scorns illustrious men of high standing
It makes light of men of danger
and falls in love with a scattered, motley rabble.
And makes peace with riffraff and nobodies

It brought them close to their hopes and kept me far away,
They drew near their hopes and it distanced me
so I cared nothing for being drawn near or sent away.
But I cared not for proximity or exile

Time lavished bounty on them, so existence is their
It favored them with munificence so bounty is theirs
preserve—though not one of them truly exists.
A sanctuary and none of them can grant sanctuary

How often it makes false promises to awaken in me
How it falsely promises me to create in me
longing for it, and feeds me hopes of support.
Yearning for it and flatters me with support

It sought to toy with my hopes, so I told it:
It hoped to toy with my hopes so I said
Do not arouse longing in me; I am not lovesick.
"Do not leave desire in me, I am not to be seduced"

Whoever has tested Time is not deceived by bluster,
He who has tried fate is not fooled by its clatter
nor does he put faith in lying promises.
Nor believes the lies of trysts

May lofty honors never be my allies if I incline toward it,
Whether it allies with me if I incline to it
whether it deliberately breaks its word or keeps a promise.
Did it intend to break faith or keep its promise?
