    How long will you grieve when death is inevitable?

    And why lament, when it is an irrevocable matter?

    And how long will you shed crimson dye from your eyelids?

    Will this crimson dye restore what has already passed?

    فجنوحُ نفسكَ للبقاءِ تحكّمُ

    A decree is enforced upon all creation;

    so your soul's longing to live on is presumption.

    A matter in which all are equal; foolish is he

    who keeps opposing time and resenting it.

    Mourning has lasted long; and do you see in its length

    anything but sorrow whose fires blaze?

    تشكو الجوى وقُوي تهدّ وتهدمُ

    A heart terrified by separation, and a last spark of life

    lamenting heartache, and strength sapped and shattered;

    تهوَى السهادَ ومهجةً تتألمُ

    and ribs that shun the bed, and eyes

    that love sleeplessness, and a soul in pain;

    and lamentation without end, and distress,

    and growing gloom, and a body that sickens.

    Be gentle with yourself, for weeping cannot bring back

    anything; and does suffering benefit the sick?

    وإذا استفزتهُ الطبيعةُ يكتمُ

    And the noble man meets fate's decree with acceptance;

    and when nature agitates him, he conceals his feelings.

    He seeks deliverance by whatever means he can,

    and when circumstances take control, he submits.

    والصبرُ أليقُ يا سليمُ وأسلمُ

    Al-Amin has perished, and we shall perish after him;

    and patience is more fitting, Salim, and safer.

    If only I knew: what has he missed?

    Is there any gain for a son of Adam in your age?

    Tell me, by your life, have you seen anyone at ease?

    Misery has encompassed all; there is no one at ease.

    Show me a man who, in his lifetime, does not complain

    of something, as he ranges through uplands and lowlands in his affairs.

    There you are, and you are someone we know well:

    this age has paid you what it was not bound to pay.

    Time has not paid you your due, and all of us

    know this; and a father is followed by a son.

    Whoever has experienced the days does not grieve over

    what is past, nor rejoice at anything to come.

    ever to change it; someone like you knows.

    والله يحفظ من يشاءُ ويعصمُ

    Yet such is man: his mind grows bewildered;

    and God guards whom He wills and keeps them safe.
