    How could the full moon ever imitate his countenance?

    And how could pearls speak of his front teeth?

    All joys yearned for his gentleness,

    As though your Lord had created him from them.

    Refined in nature, his virtues have shielded him

    From every flaw, and his good traits have adorned him.

    And God fashioned him from gentleness and refinement,

    And poured beauty into him when He formed him.

    فأنت في الشجوِ مثلي حين تلقاه

    O my reproacher, withhold your blame until you see him;

    For you will be like me in sorrow when you meet him.

    تبارك الله كلَّ الحسن أعطاه

    For every quality in him is beautiful;

    Blessed be God, who gave him all beauty.

    Even if his lover died of passion for him,

    A greeting as he passed one day would bring him back to life.

    تحل من كل قلب في سويداه

    His words intoxicate the ears with their tenderness;

    They settle in the innermost core of every heart.

    Love called my heart when it beheld him,

    Fair in his qualities—so my heart answered love and yielded to it.
