And slays the lovesick one with a languid gaze,

And slay the lovesick with a sickly glance

ويُسكر السمع بألفاظه

ويُسكر السمع بألفاظه

ويسحر اللبّ بصوتٍ رخيم

ويسحر اللبّ بصوتٍ رخيم

And intoxicates the ear with his words,

His words intoxicate the hearing

And bewitches the mind with a mellow voice.

And his soft voice enchants the mind

أحوى رشيقُ القدِ حلوُ اللمى

أحوى رشيقُ القدِ حلوُ اللمى

قلبي بهِ في كلِ وادٍ يهيمْ

قلبي بهِ في كلِ وادٍ يهيمْ

Dark-hued, slender of figure, with sweet, dusky lips—

Slender of form and sweet of features

For him, my heart wanders in every valley.

My heart for him roams every valley

مجتهد قلبيَ في حبهِ

مجتهد قلبيَ في حبهِ

وما لهُ في وصلهِ من نصيبْ

وما لهُ في وصلهِ من نصيبْ

My heart strives earnestly in loving him,

My heart strives in its love for him

Yet it has no share in union with him.

Yet attains no share in union with him
