    God is greatest! The heart grew glad and opened wide.

    Time awoke from its slumber and came to.

    وبلبلُ البرء من أفنانها صدحا

    Gladness arrived, and the gardens of serenity smiled;

    the nightingale of healing sang out from their boughs.

    The branch dances rapturously among their spreading trees

    as the east wind courses playfully through their grounds.

    The universe is bright of countenance, and its brow

    outshines the sun at forenoon in radiance.

    وانهض إلى الراح وابعث بيننا القدحا

    So seize the clear delight while Time rejoices;

    rise to the wine and pass the goblet among us.

    Do not squander the chance that Time

    and the nights have granted; rise to the cup and drink at dawn.

    Sing to me of the beautiful women, and do not

    heed whoever censures loving them—

    each deadly-lidded beauty who, whenever she looks...

    What heart has not been wounded by the sword of her glance?

    A slender beauty, a sun of loveliness—the light of her brow

    has put the forenoon sun’s light and the full moon to shame.

    If one whose innermost heart sorrow has melted should court her,

    he would at once take wing for joy at what had befallen him.
