تقول لتاليها الوقائع لا تمل

إلى صحف قد جانبت خطةَ الهدى

إلى صحف قد جانبت خطةَ الهدى

Events say to the one who recounts them: “Do not turn

Al-Waqā’iʿ says to its reader: “Do not incline

To written records that have strayed from the path of right guidance;

Toward newspapers that have strayed from the path of guidance.

ولا تعتمد إلاّ حديثي فإنني

ولا تعتمد إلاّ حديثي فإنني

أنا الصائح المحكيّ والآخر الصدى

أنا الصائح المحكيّ والآخر الصدى

And trust no account but mine, for indeed

And rely only on my account, for indeed

I am the caller being echoed; the other is but the echo.”

I am the crier whose cry is imitated, and the other is the echo.”
