أتذكرُ إذ كُنا على القبرِ ستةً

نعدّد آثار الإمام ونندبُ

Do you remember when we were six beside the grave,

I remember when we were six at the grave

Recounting the Imam’s deeds and lamenting?

Enumerating the traces of the Imam and lamenting

وقفنا بترتيبٍ وقد دبّ بيننا

وقفنا بترتيبٍ وقد دبّ بيننا

مماتٌ على وفق الرثاء مرتبُ

مماتٌ على وفق الرثاء مرتبُ

We stood in order, and among us crept

We stood in order as death crept between us

Death, arranged to match the order of the elegies.

Arranged for elegy and eulogy

أبو خطوة وليّ وقفّاه عاصمٌ

أبو خطوة وليّ وقفّاه عاصمٌ

وجاء لعبد الرازق الموتِ يطلبُ

وجاء لعبد الرازق الموتِ يطلبُ

Abu Khatwa departed, and Asim followed him;

Abu Khatwa stood guard and Asim came

And death came seeking Abd al-Raziq.

Seeking the death of Abdul Razzaq

فلبيّ وغابت بعده شمس قاسم

فلبيّ وغابت بعده شمس قاسم

وعما قليل نجم مَحياي يغربُ

وعما قليل نجم مَحياي يغربُ

So he answered, and after him Qasim’s sun set;

He responded and after him the sun of Qasim set

And soon the star of my life will set.

And shortly the star of Muhaya will set

فلا تخشى هُلكاً ما حييت وإن أمتْ

فلا تخشى هُلكاً ما حييت وإن أمتْ

فما أنت إلا خائفٌ تترقبُ

فما أنت إلا خائفٌ تترقبُ

So fear no death while I live; and if I die,

So fear no doom while you live, and when you die

Then you will be nothing but a fearful man, waiting.

You’re just an anxious one watching out

فخاطر وقع تحت الترام ولا تخفْ

فخاطر وقع تحت الترام ولا تخفْ

ونم تحت بيت الوقف وهو مخربُ

ونم تحت بيت الوقف وهو مخربُ

So take risks, and fall beneath the tram, and do not fear;

Take a risk, fall under the tram and fear not

And sleep beneath the endowment house, though it is dilapidated;

Sleep under the dome of ruins and decay

وخُض لُججَ الهيجاء أعزلَ آمنا

وخُض لُججَ الهيجاء أعزلَ آمنا

فإن المنايا منك تعدو وتهربُ

فإن المنايا منك تعدو وتهربُ

And wade through the deep waters of battle, unarmed and safe,

And plunge into the tumultuous depths safely

For death runs from you and flees.
