وَفِتيانِand young men صِدقٍtrue-heartedness لاno ضَغائِنَgrudges بَينَهُمamong them
إِذاwhen أَرمَلواthey run out of provisions لَمnot يولَعواbecome engrossed بِالتَلاوُمِin mutual blame
And true young men, with no grudges among them,
And true young men without rancor between them
when their provisions run out, do not indulge in mutual blame.
When they became destitute, they did not cling to recrimination
سَرَيتُI traveled by night بِهِمwith them حَتّىuntil تَكِلَّgrow weary مَطِيُّهُمtheir mounts
وَحَتّىand until تَراهُمyou see them فَوقَupon أَغبَرَdust-colored طاسِمِtrackless
I traveled with them by night until their mounts grew weary,
I walked with them until their riding beasts grew weary
and until you saw them upon a dusty, trackless waste.
And until you could see them above the dust of a valiant assailant
وَإِنّيand I أَذينٌa guarantor أَنthat يَقولواthey say مُزايِلٌone who departs
بِأَيٍّin weariness يَقولُsay القَومُthe men أَصحابُcompanions of حاتِمِHatim
And I am sure they will say, 'He is departing';
And indeed I fear that they will say, he is abandoning us
in weariness the men speak—Hatim's companions.
With what will the people say, the companions of Hatem
فَإِمّاso either تُصيبُattains النَفسُthe soul أَكبَرَthe greatest of هَمِّهhis ambition
وَإِمّاor else أُبَشِّركُمI bring you glad tidings بِأَشعَثَof a disheveled man غانِمِbearing booty
So either the soul attains its highest aim,
Either the soul will attain its greatest concern
or I bring you glad tidings of a disheveled man bearing booty.
Or I give you good tidings of a disheveled despoiler
