وَقائِلَةٍand many a woman saying أَهلَكتَyou have ruined بِالجودِthrough generosity مالَناour wealth
وَقائِلَةٍ أَهلَكتَ بِالجودِ مالَنا
وَنَفسَكَand yourself حَتّىuntil ضَرَّharmed نَفسَكَyourself جودُهاits generosity
وَنَفسَكَ حَتّى ضَرَّ نَفسَكَ جودُها
And many a woman has said, “Through generosity you have ruined our wealth,
And yourself, until your soul’s generosity has done you harm.”
فَقُلتُso I said دَعينيleave me be إِنَّماsimply تِلكَthat عادَتيmy habit
فَقُلتُ دَعيني إِنَّما تِلكَ عادَتي
لِكُلِّfor every كَريمٍgenerous man عادَةٌa habit يَستَعيدُهاhe repeats it
لِكُلِّ كَريمٍ عادَةٌ يَستَعيدُها
So I said, “Leave me be; that is simply my habit.
Every generous man has a habit he returns to.”
