فَخَرتُمyou boasted بِاللِواءِof the banner وَشَرُّand the worst فَخرٍboast
لِواءٌa banner حينَwhen رُدَّwas handed over إِلىto صُؤابِṢuʾāb
You boasted of the banner—and the worst of boasts
is a banner when handed over to Ṣuʾāb.
جَعَلتُمyou made فَخرَكُمyour pride فيهِin it لِعَبدٍto a slave

You made your pride in it belong to a slave,
one of the basest who tread the dust of the earth.

You thought—and the fool is a brother to fancies,
and that is not sound judgment—

that meeting us, when the day came,
was like your selling red leather bags in Mecca.

It gladdened the eye that his hands were bound,
and they were certainly not bound over henna.
