هَل توفِيَنَّ بَنو أُمَيَّةَ ذِمَّةً

هَل توفِيَنَّ بَنو أُمَيَّةَ ذِمَّةً

عَقداً كَما أَوفى جِوارُ هِشامِ

عَقداً كَما أَوفى جِوارُ هِشامِ

Will the sons of Umayya truly honor a pledge,

a binding covenant, as Hisham's protection held true—

مِن مَعشَرٍ لا يَغدُرونَ بِجارِهِم

مِن مَعشَرٍ لا يَغدُرونَ بِجارِهِم

لِلحارِثِ بنِ حُبَيِّبِ بنِ سِحامِ

لِلحارِثِ بنِ حُبَيِّبِ بنِ سِحامِ

from a people who do not betray their protected guest—

for al-Harith son of Hubayyib son of Siham?

وَإِذا بَنو حِسلٍ أَجاروا ذِمَّةً

وَإِذا بَنو حِسلٍ أَجاروا ذِمَّةً

أَوفَوا وَأَدَّوا جارَهُم بِسَلامِ

أَوفَوا وَأَدَّوا جارَهُم بِسَلامِ

And when the sons of Hisl pledge protection,

they keep faith and deliver their protected guest in safety.
