What is wrong with your eye? It does not sleep, as though

its corners were lined with the kohl of sore eyes.

    يا خَيرَ مَن وَطِئَ الحَصى لا تَبعُدِ

    Grieving for the rightly guided one, now lying buried;

O best of all who have trodden pebbles, may you not be far away.

May my side shield you from the earth! Alas, if only I

had been buried before you in Baqi al-Gharqad.

My father and mother be ransoms for the one whose death I witnessed

on Monday: the rightly guided Prophet.

    يا لَهفَ نَفسي لَيتَني لَم أولَدِ

    After his death I remained stunned;

alas for my soul, if only I had never been born.

Shall I stay after you in Medina among them?

If only I had been given black serpent’s poison one morning.

Or if only God’s decree would come upon us swiftly,

    one evening today, or tomorrow,

so that our hour would come and we would meet one

pure in character and noble in lineage.

O firstborn of Amina, whose remembrance is blessed,

a chaste woman bore you under the happiest fortune,

a light that shone upon all creation.

Whoever is guided to that blessed light finds guidance.

O Lord, gather us together with our Prophet

in a garden that turns away envious eyes,

in the Garden of Paradise; decree it for us,

O Possessor of majesty, exaltedness, and glory.

By God, whenever I hear, as long as I live, of someone’s death,

I weep for the Prophet Muhammad.

Alas for the Prophet’s Helpers and his kin

after he was hidden in the depths of the grave.

The land grew narrow for the Helpers, and their

    faces turned black as antimony.

    وَفُضولَ نِعمَتِهِ بِنا لَم نَجحَدِ

    Indeed, we bore him, and his grave is among us;

we have not denied the abundance of his grace among us.

God honored us through him and through him guided

his Helpers at every witnessed occasion.

May God, those around His throne,

and the pure bless the blessed Ahmad.

The Christians of Yathrib and its Jews rejoiced

when he was hidden in the burial chamber.
