ماذاwhat أَرَدتُمdid you want مِنfrom أَخيthe brother of الخَيرِgoodness بارَكَتmay it bless
ماذا أَرَدتُم مِن أَخي الخَيرِ بارَكَت
يَدُthe hand of اللَهِGod فيupon ذاكَthat الأَديمِthe skin المُقَدَّدِcut into strips
يَدُ اللَهِ في ذاكَ الأَديمِ المُقَدَّدِ
What did you want of my virtuous brother? May the hand
What did you want of the brother of goodness? May
of God bless that slashed flesh.
God's hand bless that slashed skin.
قَتَلتُمyou killed وَلِيَّthe friend of اللَهِGod فيin جَوفِthe interior of دارِهِhis house
قَتَلتُم وَلِيَّ اللَهِ في جَوفِ دارِهِ
وَجِئتُمand you came بِأَمرٍwith a deed جائِرٍunjust غَيرِnot مُهتَدِrightly guided
وَجِئتُم بِأَمرٍ جائِرٍ غَيرِ مُهتَدِ
You killed God’s beloved in the heart of his home,
You killed God's friend in the heart of his house,
and came with an unjust deed, devoid of guidance.
And you committed an unjust, misguided deed.
فَهَلّاthen why did you not رَعَيتُمyou honored ذِمَّةَthe covenant of اللَهِGod وَسطَكُمamong you
فَهَلّا رَعَيتُم ذِمَّةَ اللَهِ وَسطَكُم
وَأَوفَيتُمُand you were faithful بِالعَهدِto the covenant عَهدِthe covenant of مُحَمَّدِMuhammad
وَأَوفَيتُمُ بِالعَهدِ عَهدِ مُحَمَّدِ
Why did you not honor God’s covenant in your midst,
Then why did you not honor God's covenant among you
and faithfully keep the pledge—the pledge of Muhammad?
And fulfill the covenant—the covenant of Muhammad?
أَلَمdid ... not? يَكُbe فيكُمamong you ذاpossessed of بَلاءٍproven worth وَمَصدَقٍand truthfulness
أَلَم يَكُ فيكُم ذا بَلاءٍ وَمَصدَقٍ
وَأَوفاكُمُand the most faithful of you عَهداًin keeping a covenant لَدىat كُلِّevery مَشهَدِgathering
وَأَوفاكُمُ عَهداً لَدى كُلِّ مَشهَدِ
Was he not among you a man of proven service and steadfast truth,
Was he not among you a man of proven worth and truthfulness,
the most faithful of you to his word at every crucial hour?
And the most faithful of you in keeping a covenant at every gathering?
فَلاso may ... not ظَفِرَتtriumph أَيمانُthe right hands of قَومٍa people تَظاهَرَتjoined forces
فَلا ظَفِرَت أَيمانُ قَومٍ تَظاهَرَت
عَلىfor قَتلِthe killing of عُثمانَUthman الرَشيدِthe wise المُسَدَّدِthe rightly guided
عَلى قَتلِ عُثمانَ الرَشيدِ المُسَدَّدِ
May the right hands of those who joined forces never triumph
So may the right hands of a people who joined forces never triumph
in killing Uthman, the rightly guided, the divinely directed.
To kill Uthman, the wise and rightly guided.
