أَعرِضturn away عَنِfrom العَوراءِthe offensive remark إِنif أُسمِعتَهاyou are made to hear it
أَعرِض عَنِ العَوراءِ إِن أُسمِعتَها
وَاِقعُدand sit كَأَنَّكَas though you were غافِلٌunaware لاnot تَسمَعُyou hear
وَاِقعُد كَأَنَّكَ غافِلٌ لا تَسمَعُ
Turn away from the offensive remark if you are made to hear it.
And sit as though unaware, hearing nothing.
وَدَعِand leave off السُؤالَthe questioning عَنِabout الأُمورِaffairs وَبَحثَهاand investigating them
وَدَعِ السُؤالَ عَنِ الأُمورِ وَبَحثَها
فَلَرُبَّfor many a حافِرِdigger of حُفرَةٍa pit هُوَhe يُصرَعُis brought down
فَلَرُبَّ حافِرِ حُفرَةٍ هُوَ يُصرَعُ
Leave off questioning about affairs and probing them.
For many a pit-digger is himself brought down.
وَاِلزَمand keep to مُجالَسَةَthe company of الكِرامِthe noble وَفِعلَهُمand their deeds
وَاِلزَم مُجالَسَةَ الكِرامِ وَفِعلَهُم
وَإِذاand when اِتَّبَعتَyou follow فَأَبصِرَنthen look carefully مَنwhom تَتبَعُyou follow
وَإِذا اِتَّبَعتَ فَأَبصِرَن مَن تَتبَعُ
Keep company with the noble and follow their deeds.
And when you follow, look carefully at whom you follow.
لاdo not تَتبَعَنَّever follow غَوايَةًerror لِصَبابَةٍout of passionate longing
لا تَتبَعَنَّ غَوايَةً لِصَبابَةٍ
إِنَّindeed الغَوايَةَerror كُلَّevery شَرٍّevil تَجمَعُgathers
إِنَّ الغَوايَةَ كُلَّ شَرٍّ تَجمَعُ
Do not follow error out of passionate longing.
Indeed, error gathers every evil.
وَالقَومُand the company إِنif نَزَرواthey speak sparingly فَزِدthen increase فيin نَزرِهِمtheir sparing speech
وَالقَومُ إِن نَزَروا فَزِد في نَزرِهِم
لاdo not تَقعُدَنَّever sit خِلالَهُمamong them تَتَسَمَّعُyou eavesdrop
لا تَقعُدَنَّ خِلالَهُم تَتَسَمَّعُ
And if the company speak sparingly, be still more sparing.
Do not sit among them eavesdropping.
وَالشُربُand drinking لاdo not تُدمِنmake a habit of وَخُذand take مَعروفَهُits proper measure
وَالشُربُ لا تُدمِن وَخُذ مَعروفَهُ
تُصبِحyou will wake صَحيحَsound الراسِthe head لاnot تَتَصَدَّعُyou suffer a splitting headache
تُصبِح صَحيحَ الراسِ لا تَتَصَدَّعُ
Do not make drinking a habit; take its proper measure.
You will wake clear-headed, without a splitting headache.
وَاِكدَهand toil لِنَفسِكَfor yourself لاdo not تُكَلِّفburden غَيرَهاany soul other than it
وَاِكدَه لِنَفسِكَ لا تُكَلِّف غَيرَها
فَبِدَينِهاfor, according to its debt تُجزىyou are requited وَعَنهاand on its behalf تَدفَعُyou ward off harm
فَبِدَينِها تُجزى وَعَنها تَدفَعُ
And toil for yourself; do not burden another soul.
For you are requited for its debt, and ward off harm on its behalf.
وَالمَوتُand death أَعدادُunfailing watering places of النُفوسِthe souls وَلاand not أَرىI see
وَالمَوتُ أَعدادُ النُفوسِ وَلا أَرى
مِنهُfrom it لِذيfor one possessing هَرَبٍflight نَجاةًan escape تَنفَعُthat avails
مِنهُ لِذي هَرَبٍ نَجاةً تَنفَعُ
Death is the souls' unfailing watering places, and I see no
Escape from it that avails one who flees.
