She said to him one day, addressing him—
Full-rumped and supple-backed:
أَمّاas for الوَسامَةُhandsomeness وَالمُروءَةُand manly virtue أَوor
رَأيُjudgment الرِجالِof men فَقَدso indeed بَداbecame apparent حَسبيenough for me
As for handsomeness and manly virtue, or
Men’s judgment, I have seen enough to satisfy me.
فَوَدِدتُso I wished أَنَّكَthat you لَوif only تُخَبِّرُناtell us
مَنwho والِداكَyour two parents وَمَنصِبُand the origin الشَعبِof the tribe
So I wished you would tell us
Who your parents are, and the origin of your tribe.
فَضَحِكتُso I laughed ثُمَّthen رَفَعتُI raised مُتَّصِلاًwithout interruption
صَوتيmy voice أَوانَat the time of المَنطِقِspeech الشَغبِclamorous
So I laughed, then raised without pause
My voice, in the hour of clamorous speech:

My grandfather is Abu Layla, and his father
Is Amr; and my maternal uncles are the sons of Ka'b.

And I am of the people among whom, when
Winter grows harsh, allied with drought,

Those with wealth give to the needy among them,
And who strike in the place of terror.
