Our calamity is indeed grievous; truly we

Are steadfast against the vicissitudes of events and time.

On the bridge, on the day of the bridge—my anguish for them!

So, oh, my soul's anguish for the calamity on the bridge!

Men say, “Why is Hassan weeping?”

And why should I not weep for the radiant company?

And why should I not weep for the finest young men?

At Barushama, their blood began to flow.

For I shall surely weep as long as I live; and were

A dead man to weep for the dead, I would pour out tears in my grave.

So, my grief for bald-fronted Salit and his band,

And my grief for the lion of the thicket, Abu Jabr,

And a grey-haired man whose two robes were dignity, and Nashiq,

Who, when the mist cleared from him, was like the full moon.

It was as though Salit, the day he charged with his sword

And cast aside his face-covering, were al-Harith ibn Abi Shimr.

They were struck down while some of the month of fasting remained:

Seven nights—that was the Night of Decree.
