أَبَنيO sons of الحِماسِal-Himas أَلَيسَis there not مِنكُمamong you ماجِدٌa noble man
إِنَّindeed المُروءَةَmanly virtue فيamong الحِماسِal-Himas قَليلُscarce
O sons of al-Himas, is there no noble man among you?
O sons of valor, is there no glorious one among you?
Indeed, manly virtue is scarce among al-Himas.
Indeed, valor is so rare among you!
ياO وَيلَwoe to أُمِّكُمُyour mother وَوَيلَand woe to أَبيكُمُyour father
وَيلاًwoe تَرَدَّدَechoed فيكُمُamong you وَعَويلُand wailing
Woe to your mother, and woe to your father!
Oh, woe to your mothers! Woe to your fathers!
Woe that echoes among you, and wailing!
Woe that echoes among you with weeping and anguish!
هَيَّجتُمُyou provoked حَسّانَHassan عِندَat ذَكائِهِhis keenness
غَيٌّruin لِمَنfor those whom وَلَدَbegot الحِماسُal-Himas طَويلُlong-lasting
You have provoked Hassan at his sharpest;
You provoked Hassân in his sharpness of mind,
Long-lasting ruin for those whom al-Himas begot!
Woe to him who sired the long lineage of valor!
إِنَّindeed الحِجاءَseeking out إِلَيكُمُtoward you لَبِعِلَّةٍsurely for a reason
فَتَحَشحَشواso bestir yourselves إِنَّindeed الذَليلَthe abject ذَليلُabject
Indeed, there is a reason for seeking you out;
You seek help from them out of wretchedness,
So bestir yourselves: the abject are indeed abject.
So gather yourselves - the despised are despised!
لاdo not تَجزَعواbe distressed أَنthat تُنسَبواyou be ascribed لِأَبيكُمُto your father
فَاللُؤمُfor baseness يَبقىendures وَالجِبالُand the mountains تَزولُvanish
Do not be distressed at being ascribed to your father;
Do not grieve that you are ascribed to your fathers,
For baseness endures while mountains vanish.
For cowardice remains while mountains pass away.
فَبَنوfor the sons of زِيادٍZiyad لَمdid not تَلِدكَbeget you فُحولُهُمtheir sires
وَبَنوand the sons of صَلاءَةَSala'a فَحلُهُمtheir sire مَشغولُbusy
For the sons of Ziyad—their sires did not beget you;
The sons of Ziyâd - their warriors did not birth them!
And the sons of Sala'a—their sire is busy.
And the sons of Salâma - their heroes are preoccupied!
وَسَرىand traveled by night بِكُمwith you تَيسٌa he-goat أَجَمُّhornless مُجَذَّرٌsquat
ماthere is no لِلدَمامَةِfor ugliness عَنكُمُaway from you تَحويلُturning away
And a hornless, squat he-goat traveled with you by night;
An old billy goat slipped by you, very much deeply-rooted!
There is no turning ugliness away from you.
Why does the hyena not turn you away?
فَاللُؤمُfor baseness حَلَّsettled عَلىupon الحَماسِal-Himas فَماso there is no لَهُمfor them
كَهلٌa mature man يَسودُleads وَلاnor فَتىًa young man بُهلولُnoble
For baseness has settled upon al-Himas, so they have no
Cowardice has befallen Al-Himâs, so they have
mature man who leads, nor any noble youth.
No elderly man who darkens nor spirited youth!
