ياO حارِḤār إِنif كُنتَyou are اِمرَأًa man مُتَوَسِّعاًwell-off
فَاِفِدِthen ransom الأُُلىthose women who يُنصِفنَthey serve آلَthe clan of جَنابِJanāb
O Ḥār, if you are a man of ample means,
O ignoble one, if you were a man of integrity
then ransom the women who serve the clan of Janāb:
Then make amends, it would bring you good repute
أَخَواتُsisters أُمِّكَyour mother قَدalready عَلِمتَyou know مَكانَهاher station
وَالحَقُّand the truth يَفهَمُهُunderstands it ذَوُوthose possessing الأَلبابِintellects
your mother's sisters—you already know her station;
You know well the standing of your aunts
and the truth is understood by those with insight.
And the judicious understand the truth

Indeed, al-Farāfiṣa ibn al-Aḥwaṣ has with him
Al-Farafisha son of Al-Ahwas has for your mother
a branch of your mother's kin, from the daughters of ʿUqāb.
Sorrow, one of the daughters of Ukab
أَجمَعتُI have concluded أَنَّكَthat you أَنتَyou yourself أَلأَمُthe basest مَنthose who مَشىwalked
فيin فُحشِthe lewdness of مومِسَةٍa prostitute وَزَهوِand the conceit of غُرابِa crow
I have concluded that you yourself are the basest of all who ever walked,
I gather that you are the vilest who walked
with a whore's lewdness and a crow's conceit.
In the indecency of a harlot and the vanity of a crow
وَكَذاكَand likewise وَرَّثَكَbequeathed to you الأَوائِلُthe forebears أنَّهُمthat they
ذَهَبواthey departed وَصِرتَand you ended up بِخِزيَةٍwith disgrace وَعَذابِand torment
And likewise your forebears left you this legacy: they
Thus did the ancients bequeath you that they
departed, and you were left with disgrace and torment.
Perished while you remained in shame and torment
وَاللُؤمُand baseness مِنكَof yours وِراثَةٌan inheritance مَعلومَةٌwell-known
هَيهاتَfar removed مِنكَfrom you مَكارِمُnoble qualities الأَنسابِlineages
And your baseness is a well-known inheritance;
Wickedness is a known inheritance from you
far from you are the noble qualities of lineage.
Far from you are the nobilities of lineage
فَوَرِثتَso you inherited والِدَكَyour father الخِيانَةَtreachery وَالخَناand obscenity
وَاللُؤمَand baseness عِندَwhen تَقايُسِcomparison الأَحسابِancestral merits
So you inherited from your father treachery and obscenity,
You inherited from your father betrayal and impiety
and baseness, when ancestral merits are compared.
And wickedness when merits are weighed
وَأَبانَand revealed لُؤمَكَyour baseness أَنَّthat أُمَّكَyour mother لَمnot تَكُنwas
إِلّاexcept لِشَرِّfor the vilest مَقارِفِfornicator الأَعرابِthe Bedouins
And your baseness was exposed: your mother was not
And your vileness revealed that your mother
for anyone but the vilest fornicator among the Bedouins,
Was none but for the evil of nomads’ debauchery
فيin فُحشِthe lewdness of مومِسَةٍa prostitute قَليلٍscant عَقلُهاher sense
مَشهورَةٍnotorious بِالفُحشِfor lewdness ذاتِgiven to سِبابِabuse
with the lewdness of a whore whose sense is scant,
Of little mind in the indecency of a well-known harlot
notorious for lewdness and given to abuse.
Renowned for abomination and curses
وَوَسَمتَand you branded إِستَكَyour arse ثُمَّthen قُلتَyou said أَناI الفَتىthe young man
وَخَضِبتَand you dyed كَفَّيthe two palms of سارِقٍa thief بِخِضابِwith dye
And you branded your arse, then said, 'I am the man!'
You marked your lineage, then claimed to be the youth
And you dyed a thief's two palms with dye.
And dyed your hands like a thief with henna
وَجَلَستَand you sat لِلعُهّارِfor the fornicators مَجلِسَa seat of فِتنَةٍtemptation
وَذَمَمتَand you reviled عَينَيthe two eyes of مومَسٍa prostitute بِصُوابِrightly
And you took a seat of temptation for the fornicators,
And you sat for the pimp in a tempting session
and you rightly reviled a prostitute's two eyes.
And stared with desire at a harlot’s eyes
مَنَّتكَheld out hope to you نَفسُكَyour soul ياO اِبنَson of صَقعَبَṢaqʿab مُنيَةًa wish

Your soul held out a hope to you, O son of Ṣaqʿab;
Your soul deluded you, O Saqab’s son, with a death wish
your soul lied to you—it has no fang.
Your soul lied to you, it has no determination
