O eye, pour forth your scant tears,

And in prosperity remember the people of the graves.

And remember Mu'tah and what happened there,

The day they turned back in the raiding battle,

When they turned back and left Zayd there,

An excellent refuge for the destitute and the captive,

Beloved of the best of all creation,

The master of mankind, love for him dwelling in hearts.

    ذاكَ حُزني مَعاً لَهُ وَسُروري

    That is Ahmad, none other than he;

For him are both my sorrow and my joy.

Indeed, Zayd held a standing among us,

Not the standing of one disbelieved and deluded.

Then pour forth tears for the Khazraji,

A chief who was there, never stingy.

What has reached us of their deaths is enough for us,

So we spend the night in sorrow, not joy.
