ماnot وَلَدَتكُمbegot you قُرومٌchieftains مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of أَسَدِAsad
No chieftains of the sons of Asad begot you,
No Quraysh tribe gave birth to you, nor Hudhayl, nor Taym, nor 'Umar,
Nor Huṣayṣ, nor Taym, nor ʿUmar,
Nor 'Adiyy, Ibn Ka'b's son. Their lineage
وَلاnor عَدِيُّʿAdī اِبنُson of كَعبٍKaʿb إِنَّindeed صَبغَتَهاits hue
كَالهُندُوانِيِّlike an Indian sword لاnot رَثٌّworn-out وَلاnor دَإِرُrusty
Nor ʿAdī son of Kaʿb; indeed, its hue
Is pure as Indian swords - no rust or damage.
Is like an Indian sword, neither worn nor rusty.
Yet you're a slave to Qayn - a heartless man
وَأَنتَand you عَبدٌa slave لِقَينٍto a smith لاno فُؤادَheart لَهُfor him
مِنfrom آلِthe house of شَجعٍShajʿ هُناكَthere اللَومُblame وَالخَوَرُand weakness
And you are a slave to a smith who has no heart,
Of Shijaa's line. Blame and disgrace await him there.
Of the house of Shajʿ; there lie blame and weakness.
For it is clear, as clear as the rising moon,
وَقَدand indeed تَبَيَّنَhas become clear فيamong شِجعٍShijʿ وِلادَتُكُمyour birth
كَماjust as تَبَيَّنَhas become clear أَنّىfrom where يَطلُعُrises القَمَرُthe moon
And your birth among Shijʿ has become clear,
That you are not from Shijaa's noble line.
Just as it is clear where the moon rises.
