No, by God, Hudhayl does not know

whether Zamzam's water is pure or mixed.

Nor, when they perform ʿumrah and Hajj, do they have

any share in the two stones and the course of ritual running.

    But al-Rajīʿ is their dwelling-place,

where manifest baseness and faults reside.

As though they, beside the daughters-in-law in the late afternoon,

were billy goats in the Hijaz, bleating.

    فَبِئسَ العَهدُ عَهدُهُمُ الكَذوبُ

    They deceived Khubayb with their pledge of protection;

so evil is the covenant—their deceitful covenant!

You herd them and drive them against me,

for they have lived, yet they have no hearts.
