عَينَيَّO my two eyes جوداboth shed tears freely عَلىfor فارِسٍa horseman
بِأَجراعِat the sandy tracts of مُؤتَةَMu'tah فَالأَخرَجِand al-Akhraj
My two eyes, weep freely for a horseman
My eyes spotted a knight
At the sandy tracts of Mu'tah and al-Akhraj,
With the cups of Mutha so he brought out
طَويلَlong النَجادِthe sword-baldric رَفيعَlofty العِمادِthe tent-pole
مُصاصِpurest النِجارِlineage مِنَfrom الخَزرَجِthe Khazraj
Long of sword-baldric, lofty of tent-pole,
Tall, with high pillars
Of purest lineage, from the Khazraj.
Sucking the carpenter from Khazraj
وَيَنميand trace the lineage of رَواحَةَRawaha آبائَهُhis forebears
إِلىto كُلِّevery ذيpossessor of غُرَّةٍa shining brow أَبلَجِradiant
And his forebears trace Rawaha's descent
And he grows the glory of his fathers
To every radiant man with a shining brow.
To every one with a white forehead
فَلَهفيso, my anguish عَلَيكَfor you غَداةَat dawn الصَباحِthe morning
إِذاwhen هَتَفَتcried out رَبَّةُthe lady of الهَودَجِthe howdah
So how I mourn you at morning's dawn,
So I yearn for you in the morning
When the lady of the howdah cried out.
When the lady of the tent calls
إِذاwhen ساوَرَassailed القَومُthe men أَقرانَهُمtheir opponents
قَصَدتَyou made for إِلىtoward الفارِسِthe horseman الأَهدَجِunsteady in movement
When the men assailed their opponents,
When the people pace their peers
You made for the unsteady horseman,
You head towards the dumb knight
فَغادَرتَهُso you left him مُقعَصاًslain outright فيin الوَغاthe fray
وَكَفُّكَand your hand فيupon الرُمحِthe spear لَمdid not تَشنَجِcramp
So you left him slain outright in the fray,
So you left him fallen in the valley
And your hand upon the spear did not cramp.
And your palm on the spear did not flinch
وَإِنand if ضاقَgrew tight بِالمَوتِat death صَدرُthe breast of اِمرِئٍa man
فَصَدرُكَyet your breast بِالمَوتِat death لَمdid not يَحرَجِgrow distressed
And if a man's breast tightened at death,
And if death tightens a person's chest
Yet your breast felt no distress at death.
Yours did not shudder at death
مَضىpassed on صاحِباكَyour two companions وَقَدand already ضُرِّجاboth were drenched
شَهيدَينِas two martyrs بِالعَلَقِwith thick blood الأَضرَجِdeep-crimson
Your two companions passed on, already drenched
Your two companions passed away
In thick, deep-crimson blood, as two martyrs.
Martyred by the muddy blood
وَكانَand was لِباثُكَyour delay عَنbehind صاحِبَيكَyour two companions
كَمُلجِمِlike one bridling طَرفٍa noble steed وَلَمand had not يُسرَجِbeen saddled
And your delay behind your two companions was
And your crying over your companions
Like the time to bridle a steed still unsaddled.
Was like a bridled gaze that did not flow
