لَقَد عَلِمَت بَنو النَجّارِ أَنّي

لَقَد عَلِمَت بَنو النَجّارِ أَنّي

أَذودُ عَنِ العَشيرَةِ بِالحُسامِ

أَذودُ عَنِ العَشيرَةِ بِالحُسامِ

Indeed, the sons of al-Najjar know that I

The sons of Najjar knew well that I

Defend the clan with the keen-edged sword.

Defend the clan with my sharp sword.

وَقَد أَبقَيتُ في سَهمٍ عُلوباً

وَقَد أَبقَيتُ في سَهمٍ عُلوباً

إِلى يَومِ التَغابُنِ وَالخِصامِ

إِلى يَومِ التَغابُنِ وَالخِصامِ

And I have left scars upon Sahm

And I have left in my arrows a vengeance

Until the Day of Mutual Loss and Dispute.

Until the day of reckoning and strife.

فَلا تَفخَر فَقَد غَلَبَت قَديماً

فَلا تَفخَر فَقَد غَلَبَت قَديماً

عَلَيكَ مَشابِهٌ مِن آلِ حامِ

عَلَيكَ مَشابِهٌ مِن آلِ حامِ

So do not boast, for long ago there prevailed

In you traits of the house of Ham.

Your like were vanquished by Ham's clan.

فَلَستَ إِلى الذَوائِبِ مِن قُصَيٍّ

فَلَستَ إِلى الذَوائِبِ مِن قُصَيٍّ

وَلا في عِزِّ زُهرَةَ إِذ تُسامي

وَلا في عِزِّ زُهرَةَ إِذ تُسامي

So you are not among the crests of Qusayy,

You are not of Qusaia's noble line,

Nor in Zuhra's glory when you vie for eminence,

Nor of lofty Zuhra's pride when contending.

وَلا في الفَرعِ مِن أَبناءِ عَمروٍ

وَلا في الفَرعِ مِن أَبناءِ عَمروٍ

وَلا في فَرعِ مَخزومِ الكِرامِ

وَلا في فَرعِ مَخزومِ الكِرامِ

Nor in the high branch of the sons of Amr,

Nor are you of Amr's sons, nor a scion

Nor in the branch of Makhzum's noble men.

Of honored Makhzum's noble lineage.

فَأَقصِر عَن هِجاءِ بَني قُصَيٍّ

فَأَقصِر عَن هِجاءِ بَني قُصَيٍّ

فَقَد جَرَّبتَ وَقعَ بَني حَرامِ

فَقَد جَرَّبتَ وَقعَ بَني حَرامِ

So desist from satirizing the sons of Qusayy,

So cease your railing against Qusaia's sons,

For you have experienced the blows of the sons of Haram.

For you have tried the mettle of Haram's sons.
