إِنَّindeed اِمرَأًa man أَمسىreached evening وَأَصبَحَand reached morning سالِماًsafe
مِنَfrom الناسِpeople إِلّاexcept ماwhat جَنىhe brought upon himself لِسَعيدُis truly fortunate
Indeed, a man who reaches evening and morning safe
A man may pass the night and see the morn
From others, except for what he has brought upon himself, is truly fortunate.
Secure from men's assaults, save what's foredoomed;
وَإِنَّand indeed اِمرَأًa man نالَgained الغِنىwealth ثُمَّthen لَمdid not يُنِلbestow
قَريباًa kinsman وَلاnor ذاone possessing خُلَّةٍclose friendship لَزَهيدُis truly miserly
And indeed, a man who gains wealth, then gives nothing
And he in easy plenty may be drowned,
To a kinsman or a close friend, is truly miserly.
Yet neither kith nor kin afford him calm;
وَإِنَّand indeed اِمرَأًa man عادىtreated as enemies الرِجالَmen عَلىover الغِنىwealth
وَلَمand did not يَسأَلِask اللَهَGod الغِنىwealth لَحَسودُis truly envious
And indeed, a man who treats other men as enemies over wealth
And he may war on men in prideful mood,
And does not ask God for wealth, is truly envious.
Yet not implore from Allah wealth and weal.
