In Taybah are traces of the Messenger and a familiar site,

radiant, though traces may fade and fall still.

And the signs are not erased from an abode of sanctity,

where stands the Guide's pulpit, which he used to ascend.

And clear vestiges and enduring landmarks,

and a dwelling where he had a place of prayer and a mosque.

There are chambers there, into whose midst would descend

a light from God, by which light is sought and which is kindled.

    أَتاها البِلى فَالآيُ مِنها تُجَدَّدُ

    Familiar landmarks, their signs unerased, as in former days;

decay has reached them, yet their signs are renewed.

I recognized there the Messenger's traces and his former abode,

and a grave there, where a gravedigger buried him in the earth.

I remained there weeping for the Messenger, and was joined by

eyes, and twice their number of eyelids, sharing my grief.

It recalls the Messenger's blessings, but I do not see

my soul able to count them; my soul is bewildered,

    فَظَلَّت لِآلاءِ الرَسولِ تُعَدِّدُ

    grief-stricken, worn thin by the loss of Ahmad;

so it continued recounting the Messenger's blessings.

Yet of all his deeds it has not reached a tenth,

but my soul still has cause to grieve.

It lingered long, the eye shedding tears with all its strength,

over the mound of the grave in which Ahmad lies.

Blessed be you, O grave of the Messenger, and blessed

the lands where the wise, rightly guided one rested.

And blessed be the niche within you that held a pure one,

over whom lies a structure of layered stone slabs.

Hands heap earth upon him, and eyes

are upon him; with that, good fortunes have vanished.

Indeed, they have buried forbearance, knowledge, and mercy,

the evening they heaped earth over him, with no pillow beneath him.

And they departed in grief, their Prophet no longer among them,

and their backs and upper arms had grown weak.

They mourn him whose day the heavens lament,

and whom the earth has mourned; the people grieve more deeply still.

Has the calamity of anyone's death ever equaled

the calamity of the day on which Muhammad died?

That day, the sending down of revelation to them was cut off,

and he had borne a light, traveling through lowlands and highlands.

He guides whoever follows him to the All-Merciful,

and saves them from the terror of disgrace, and guides aright.

A leader for them, striving to guide them to the truth,

a teacher of truth: if they obey him, they prosper.

    وَإِن يُحسِنوا فَاللَهُ بِالخَيرِ أَجوَدُ

    Forgiving of missteps, he accepts their excuses;

and if they do good, God is more generous in goodness.

And if a matter befell them whose burden they could not bear,

from him came an easing of what grew difficult.

And while they were in God's blessing, in their midst

was a guide through whom the clear path was followed,

it was grievous to him that they should stray from guidance,

eager that they remain upright and rightly guided.

Tender toward them, he never draws his wing back

to one side; he bends toward them and smooths their way.

And while they were in that light, suddenly there came

toward their light a fatal arrow from death.

    يُبكيهِ حَقُّ المُرسِلاتِ وَيُحمَدُ

    So, praised, he returned to God;

the truth of those sent forth mourns him, and he is praised.

And the sacred lands grew desolate in their expanses,

for the absence of the revelation they used to know.

Barren, save the inhabited burial niche, which received as guest

the one now lost, whom Balat and Gharqad mourn,

and his mosque; the places desolate at his loss

are empty, where he had a standing-place and a seat.

And at the Great Jamrah, there grew desolate his

dwellings, open courts, abode, and birthplace.

So weep for God's Messenger, O eye, shedding tears,

and never let me find your tears frozen, so long as time endures.

And why do you not weep for the bearer of the blessing

that abundantly covers and enfolds the people?

So lavish tears upon him, and wail

for the loss of one whose like is never found in all time.

Those gone before never lost anyone like Muhammad,

nor will his like be lost until the Resurrection:

more chaste and truer to covenant after covenant,

or more approachable than he, with bounty never marred,

or more generous than he with new and inherited wealth,

    when even a lavish giver begrudged what he had inherited;

or nobler in renown among houses when he declared his lineage,

or nobler in a forebear from Abtah, acknowledged as chief,

or more unassailable in his summits, and firmer in lofty

pillars of honor, towering and raised high,

or firmer in branch among branches, and in root,

and in a stem fed by rainclouds, so the stem is supple.

He was nurtured as an infant and brought to full perfection

in the noblest virtues by a glorified Lord.

    فَلا العِلمِ مَحبوسٌ وَلا الرَأيُ يُفنَدُ

    Counsel for the Muslims reached its fullness in his hand;

so knowledge is not withheld, nor judgment refuted.

I speak, and none is found to fault what I have said

among the people, save one bereft of reason, far astray.

    لَعَلّي بِهِ في جَنَّةِ الخُلدِ أَخلَدُ

    And my love does not turn away from praising him;

perhaps through it I shall dwell forever in the Garden of Eternity,

with the Chosen One; through that I hope to live beside him,

and I strive and labor to attain that day.
