رَمَيتُI drove بِهاwith her أَهلَthe people of المَضيقِthe narrow pass فَلَمso … not تَكَدshe nearly managed
تَخَلَّصُshe gets clear مِنof حَمّارَةٍdonkey drivers وَأَباعِرِand camels
I drove her among the people of the narrow pass; she could scarcely
get clear of donkey drivers and camels.
وَمَرَّتand she passed عَلىby الأَنصارِthe Ansar وَسطَamid رِحالِهِمtheir encampments
فَقُلتُso I said لَهُمto them مَنwho صادِرٌdeparting مَعَwith صادِرِone departing
And she passed the Ansar amid their encampments.
So I said to them, “Who will leave with one who is leaving?”
وَطَوَّفتُand I circumambulated بِالبَيتِaround the House العَتيقِthe Ancient وَسامَحَتand became easy
طَريقُthe road of كَداءٍKadāʾ فيalong لُحوبٍbroad tracks سَوائِرِleading onward
And I circled the Ancient House, and the going eased
on the road of Kadāʾ, along broad tracks leading onward.
ذَكَرتُI thought of بِهاin that place التَعريسَhalting late at night لَمّاwhen بَداappeared لَناto us
خِيَمٌtents بِهاin that place مِنfrom بَينِamong بادٍa nomad وَحاضِرِand a settled dweller
There I thought of a night’s halt, when we saw
tents there, of nomads and settled folk alike.
وَأَعرَضَand came into view ذوDhu دَورانَDawran تَحسِبُyou would think سَرحَهُits sarh trees
مِنَfrom الجَدبِdrought أَعناقَthe necks of النِساءِthe women الحَواسِرِbareheaded
And Dhu Dawran came into view; you would think its sarh trees
were, from drought, the necks of bareheaded women.
فَعَجَّتthen she bellowed وَأَلقَتand laid down لِلجِرانِto the underside of the neck رَجيلَةًstrong of stride
لَأَنظُرَso I might see ماwhat زادُthe provisions of الكَريمِthe noble المُسافِرِtraveler
Then she bellowed and, strong of stride, laid her neck down,
so I might see what provisions the noble traveler had.
إِذاthere was فَضلَةٌa remnant مِنfrom بَطنِthe belly of زِقٍّa wineskin وَنُطفَةٌand a little water

There was a remnant from a wineskin’s belly, and a little water,
and a small wooden bowl atop a lean, crooked-legged she-camel.
فَقُمتُso I rose بِكَأسٍwith a cup قَهوَةٍof wine فَشَنَنتُهاthen I diluted it
بِذيwith something possessing رَونَقٍlustre مِنof ماءِthe water of زَمزَمَZamzam فاتِرِlukewarm
Then I rose with a cup of wine and diluted it
with gleaming, lukewarm water from Zamzam.
