    His running saved Hakim on the day of Badr,

    like the flight of a colt born of al-A‘waj’s daughters.

    He cast aside his weapons and fled from it, unchecked,

    like a deft weaver gliding over the loom.

    Because he saw Badr, its open ground streaming

    with battalions from al-Aws or al-Khazraj,

    steadfast men who give armored warriors their doom to drink,

    walking the broad stretch of the clear road.

    بَطَلٍ بِمَكرَهَةِ المَكانِ المُحرِجِ

    How many a noble man among them, possessed of fierce spirit,

    a hero in the ordeal of a perilous place;

    and a chieftain giving great bounty with his hand,

    a crowned bearer of heavy blood-money burdens,

    ضَربَ الكُماةِ بِكُلِّ أَبيَضَ سَلجَجِ

    the assembly’s ornament, ever renewing on the day of battle

    his blows against armored warriors with every white, keen-edged blade;

    or every splendid nobleman endowed with strength,

    or every fully armed man with his sword-belt hanging loose.

    And Huwayrith, son of the woman with the red perineum, escaped,

    his brain boiling within him like boiling gold.
