Hear now: tell al-Dahhak that his veins

have proved too intractable for Islam to ennoble.

Do you love the Jews of the Hijaz and their faith,

O donkey's liver, yet have no love for Muhammad?

And whenever a naive youth of yours grows up,

dull of heart, you command him, and he becomes a Jew.

If you were one of us, you would not oppose our faith.

Yet you followed Atik's faith when he professed it—

a faith, by your life, that does not accord with our faith,

so long as a mirage courses and races across the open desert.
