أَخِلّاءُfriends الرَخاءِprosperity هُمُthey كَثيرٌmany
أَخِلّاءُ الرَخاءِ هُمُ كَثيرٌ
وَلَكِنand yet فيin البَلاءِadversity هُمُthey قَليلُfew
وَلَكِن في البَلاءِ هُمُ قَليلُ
Friends in times of ease are many,
Friends in prosperity are many,
but in adversity they are few.
And yet in adversity they are few.
فَلاso do not يَغرُركَdeceive you خُلَّةُfriendship مَنthe one whom تُؤاخيyou take as a brother
فَلا يَغرُركَ خُلَّةُ مَن تُؤاخي
فَماfor there is no لَكَfor you عِندَat the time of نائِبَةٍa calamity خَليلُfriend
فَما لَكَ عِندَ نائِبَةٍ خَليلُ
Do not let the friendship of one you befriend deceive you,
So let not the friendship of one you take as a brother deceive you,
for when calamity strikes, you have no true friend.
For in calamity you have no friend.
وَكُلُّand every أَخٍbrother يَقولُhe says أَناI وَفِيٌّloyal
وَكُلُّ أَخٍ يَقولُ أَنا وَفِيٌّ
وَلَكِنand yet لَيسَdoes not يَفعَلُdo ماwhat يَقولُhe says
وَلَكِن لَيسَ يَفعَلُ ما يَقولُ
Every brother says, “I am loyal,”
And every brother says, “I am loyal,”
but he does not do what he says—
And yet he does not do what he says,
سِوىexcept خِلٍّa close friend لَهُhe has حَسَبٌhonorable standing وَدينٌand faith
سِوى خِلٍّ لَهُ حَسَبٌ وَدينٌ
فَذاكَfor that one لِماin accordance with what يَقولُhe says هُوَhe الفَعولُthe true doer
فَذاكَ لِما يَقولُ هُوَ الفَعولُ
except a friend possessed of honor and faith:
Except a friend possessed of honor and faith;
that one truly acts upon his word.
For he truly does what he says.
