بَعدَكَ صَوبُ المُسبِلِ الهاطِلِ
Do you recognize the dwelling whose traces were erased
Do you know the house whose traces have been effaced
After you left, by a raincloud's heavy, streaming downpour,
Beyond you towards the torrential, pouring valleys
بَينَbetween السَراديحِal-Saradih فَأُدمانَةٍand Udmanah

فَمَدفَعِ الرَوحاءِ في حائِلِ
Between al-Saradih and Udmanah,
Between the stony ground and the sandy plains
And the outlet of al-Rawha, in Ha'il?
And the winds blowing through the mountain passes

I asked it about that, but it gave no answer;
I asked about that place but she was perplexed
It knew not what reply to give the questioner.
Not knowing who was asking and seeking

Leave aside a dwelling whose traces have faded,
Leave alone a house whose traces are gone
And weep for Hamza, giver of bounty:
And weep for Hamza, man of the spears

Who filled the wooden bowls whenever there blew
When the dust storms swirl violently
A dust-gray wind in a barren year of drought;
In the waning years that are fleeting

Stumbling with enfeebled joints that are wasting

And who plunged among the horsemen when they held back,
And the one who charges his horses when they stampede
Like the valiant lion amid its thickets.
Like a lion in the thickets, undaunted and bold

Fair, at the summit of Hashim's line,
A shining white Hashimite in the high peaks
He never argued with falsehood against the truth.
Who never passed by falsehood, upholding the truth

What befell the martyr among your spears?
What's a martyr to do among your spears
May Wahshi's two hands be paralyzed, murderer that he is!
That paralyze the hands of a vicious killer

Indeed, a man was left slain by a broad-bladed spear,
A man was betrayed among ravaging armies
Sharpened, with a supple upper shaft;
Surrounding, vicious, relentlessly toiling

The earth grew dark at his loss,
The earth darkened when he left
And the rising moon's light turned black.
And the light of the radiant moon was extinguished

We used to see Hamza as our refuge
We saw Hamza as a refuge protecting us
From every calamity that descended upon us.
From every matter that afflicted and opposed

And in Islam he was a staunch defender,
In Islam he was unfailing and sound
He was neither slack nor one to forsake others.
No weakness or frailty making him fall

Do not rejoice, O Hind; milk forth
Don't rejoice, O Hind, and pretend to cry
Tears, and shed the tears of the bereaved.
Shedding tears and moaning like a bereft mother

Weep for Utbah when he was sliced by the sword
With the sword beneath the swirling dust,
Under the crushing, overwhelming blows

When an elder of yours fell in folly
Each a defiant man with an ignorant heart.
With a heart ignorant of what was right

Hamza laid them low amid a band of kinsmen
Hamza drove them back in droves
Marching beneath trailing rings of mail,
Walking under the swaying spearheads

The next morning Gabriel was his minister
What a fine helper for the charging horseman!
Excellent minister for the brave cavalier
